Corporal George PARKINSON from Merseyside for the fighting service of the ROYAL IRISH INNISKILLINGS, he was with the 6th, which saw their first Bn attack at TWO TREE HILL in TUNISIA 13 Jan 1943, within the IRISH BDE, BOU ARADA and then the INVASION of SICILY, here especially for his unit’s part in the BATTLE to take the prominent position CENTURIPE (“Cherry Ripe”).
Then among many proud “D-DAY DODGERS” (he recalled THREE INVASIONS himself, met and knew the writer of these famous verses) of the FIFTH (US) ARMY and the EIGHTH ARMY under Gen. Alexander, fighting hard up ITALY and on into AUSTRIA; George was in the MORTAR and PIAT TEAM, surprised at VE-DAY to have lost only two of their thirteen number; as with FEPOWS, highly relieved about JAPAN’s surrender, as they were earmarked to go there – in his family there was also a SUBMARINER and a RAF INSTRUMENT TECHNICIAN.
