Born in in 1922, Norman Loats joined the US Navy in July 1942 and was assigned as storekeeper to the aircraft carrier USS Gambier Bay in 1944. The Gambier Bay sailed to join Carrier Support Group 2, which was staging in the Marshalls to support the invasion of the Marianas.

Belgian aviator who, with Leon Divoy, flew in a dramatic escape to Essex at night on 5th July, 1940 in a stolen Stampe (an old biplane similar to a Tiger Moth) near Germans and Waterloo. After they both joined the RAF, he went on to fly Spitfires with 64 Sqn OC 64 & 350 Belgian Squadrons.

Aged 23, as ‘Amniarix’ in the DRUIDES network, showed great courage evading Gestapo to capture crucial German rockets programme information, vital intelligence leading to Bombing of Peenemünde (German V-1 Doodlebug and V-2 Rockets). Captured twice and sent to three concentration camps.
